It can not be stressed enough, "Your Plan is only as good as your Last Test".  You don't know if it's going to work unless you've tried to make it work.  Think about it.  When was the last time you did something for the first time and it worked perfectly? 

When conducting a test of your business continuity  / disaster recovery plan, do not expect to achieve 100% of your objectives the first time out.  Reconstructing a business in a foreign environment is a daunting task - and just like it took years to build the business to the point it's at today - rebuilding that business to the desired Recovery Point and Recovery Time Objectives will take time and experience.

There are four ways that your plan can be tested:

  • Armchair Review: Reading the plan to see if it makes sense
  • Tabletop Exercise: Sit with your recovery team and walk through various scenarios
  • Physical / Component Testing: Actually conduct a recovery exercise using your plan
  • Actual Event: This should not be the first time you test your plan
